"Goldsmith points out that the linguistic basis of the digital era holds consequences for literature that are as potentially shattering and vitalizing as the arrival of mechanical reproduction was for visual art: 'With the rise of the Web, writing has met its photography.'"

I found this statement to be very interesting as I read "Digital Divide". As technology continues to rapidly advance, we often forget the negative affects it has on traditional mediums. Literature, for example, is being replaced by visual communication. Society no longer has to read the paper, they can simply watch the news. We can see images of war and listen to the radio instead of sitting down and reading the paper about our soldiers overseas. Visual media and technology is lessening the need for literature in todays society.
