For my Hardware project I chose to make a kinetic sculpture. I was really interested in the kinetic artworks that Lisa shared in the lecture. My favorites were Alexander Calder and Ed Osborn. I admired the simplicity in the movement of Calder's pieces. They were beautiful and delicate. I appreciated Osborn"s works because they too were made of simple parts, but I also enjoyed the natural sounds created through mechanical means. For my project I tried many different things that would be similar in aesthetic to the two artists aforementioned; however, I had to work with what I had and boy was it frustrating! I literally cried trying to do this project. I went through about 5 different design attempts before the one that I used for my final project. It was difficult to simply get everything to work the way I wanted it to.
My presented piece is a dance of colors. I like that it simple, which is a goal I had from the start. There are some structural issues I couldn't overcome though. This piece is given life through movement. When it is still the cloth hangs limply around the form, but when it is switched on it dances! In a way, this idea is derived from the auto-destructive art manifesto which states that part of its mission is to show "change, growth, movement." I think my piece shows all of those things. The piece changes when it is turned on, the form grows outward (and I grew as an artist making it), and it definitely utilizes movement.
