Digital Divide

After reading this article Digital Divide something that really got my attention was when it states, “After all, photography and film were embrace rapidly and wholeheartedly in the 1920s, as was video in the late 1960s and 70s”. The way I interpret this statement is that we seem to think that photography and film was a natural step to make when it comes to the contemporary art world. So it is trying to get to the point to why is it that right for the contemporary art world to accept photography and film if they are still part of the digital world but find coding complex for the art world. I think that it should be something more accepting. To my opinion everything can be art. I think that art can be a way of thinking because you have to be open mind to be able to understand people’s ideas and also in order to disclaim something from being art you must have a really legit argument.

Project

Something that brings me into the art world is the fact of being a open minded person. Being a person that you can really but your self-expression to practice. And that I why I choose to compare with Kit Galloway and Sherrie because I like the fact that she is a performance artist. I experience my first performance not that long ago at UCSB it was a project correlated to immigration.

So in this project had to do with exploring the boundaries of the comfort of undocumented. So I was outside by the UCEN and I was “giving out green cards”. At first I felt like people where very uncomfortable because I was literally there for like 30 minutes and not one soul stopped by to get a green card. A green card that gave you the opportunity to change your name and also change their ethnicity. To me it was weird that although I had that option about 80% of the people that came to me where very comfortable with whole there were. They did not have an issue with their name and ethnicity. I was really surprised to see that many of the people that came where not of color. It was scary for me because I was not sure that people would react because I heard a lady say, “He would be Mexican”. There were also many people that where from high school and they were giving me some weird looks because they like what is he doing. I had like a group of 10 come and ask what I was doing I had to explain my project and they were unaware of the issue which made me feel good because I helped them learn something new. A little later their counselor came to me to thank me for tell their students a little bit about AB540 students in higher education.
