Readings
In the article, "Six degrees of separation" by Albert-Laszlo Barabasi's focuses on the idea of the different degrees of separation between people. The author also talks about how Milgram furthers this idea (unknowingly) through experiments with postcards. Milgram found that the average person is connected by 5.5 degree of separation wish rounds up to the 6 degrees of separation. The author believes that the six degrees is not a small way of connection there is already smaller ways to connect with people in between. I think that this can slightly help with the idea of my project well at least the one I am trying to create a place online that people can connected with each other
In the article "Six Degrees of Interconnection" by Duncan Watts, the main point of the article is the importance of networking space, both physical and digital and how it's set up and navigated through. Duncan believes that the internet and all these different networks have because something were can not live without because we have incorporated to be in our daily use in our everyday lives. A main point is the idea and understanding of the world is a small-world phenomenon: which is the claim that anyone on the planet is connected to anyone else by only six degrees of separation. Meaning that no matter how far away you are from one another you can still have a way to connect with them. This was an interesting article for me because its interesting to know that no matter what your connected with someone even if they are strangers. This puts me to think that I want to make something like this for my project.
"The Death of the Author" by Roland Barthes, is a rather dense article that ultimately focuses on the idea of eliminating the author from writing and literature. Meaning, that there should not be much emphasis put on the name or the person that has written a body of work. He believes that many times people become so wrapped up in the name and criticism of the person themselves that the actual writing is looked over without in depth thought of the work itself, detached from the person who wrote it. It makes perfect sense to me that authors want to make a name for themselves and that what really writing is about making a name for yourself. But in the article they focus on how the author can sometimes just die out because there writing might not be so good but they ideas they have are great.
"The Art of Cyberspace" by Pierre Levy comments on technology can help us facilitate art and communication. Through art that is based in cyberspace we can experience other methods of communication and creation. We are no longer limited to what is physically present, but rather can manipulate and participate in art work that is not physical at all, but rather completely digital. This in away helps everyone become really interactive with the way people to interact with each other. Then the article goes on to talk about how the with the technological advancement we have facilitated the way we connected with other. It almost seems that everyone has become to be apart of the cyberspace art that everyone just happens to be everyone collaborators.
Project

For my project I chose to map a network. I decided to make a map of all the people I was in high school and all the schools that we went of to. It is funny to realized after making this map to really think about who still has contact with each other. I went ahead and color-coded with red that the people that I have had contact with day one. Also yellow and green, yellow is just that I know one or two of the people I know are there and green is that I still have a "hi & bye" relationship with someone I know there. As for blue and orange are just to map out the rest of the school just to add more color to the map. Blue CSU and Orange UC. This really helped me to realized that a lot of people I know actually when to college because I was living in a state of mind that a few people when to school. That's because looking around in my neighborhood less than 10 percent have a college degree.
