Reading 1: History

"So why continue to work with "real" analog equipment? Artists like Dean, the preeminent spokesperson for old media, stake their attachment to celluloid as a fidelity to history, to craft, to the physicality of the editing process; the passing of real film is a loss to be mourned."
- Claire Bishop on Contemporary Art and New Media

I found this statement interesting because I agreed with the sentiment behind it. Using older techniques such as film, feels like an ode to the analog. There is something lost with the new digital age. Going back to film and analog feels nostalgic, like time travelling back to the past. Although applications such as instagram can "recreate" these old film effects, there is still an authenticity missing from those digital pictures. And this fact indeed is "a loss to be mourned."
