For my project I chose to make a kinetic artwork using found moving objects, an old video cassette
recorder and an old laser printer. Utilizing the gear mechanisms within both components, I aligned them in a way that would
cause movement resulting in the rotation of a paper between the rollers previously used to feed paper within the printer. With
the help of a cordless drill, the required power to turn the gears was achieved.
I find it fascinating the visuals that come with the use of these otherwise useless and thrown away objects to entertain
and provide an aesthetically amusing movement. Eduardo Kac states in The Origin and Development of Robotic Art,
"As artists continue to push the very limits of art, they have introduced robotics as a new medium while challenging our
understanding of robots - questioning therefore our premises in conceiving, building, and employing these electronic creatures."
This means, with the ever increasing introduction of robotic "creatures" into our lives, we as artists feel a desire
to create artworks employing this technology. With new robotic capabilities comes the ability to create new artworks which would
not be possible without first developing the electronic components necessary.
