In Claire Bishop’s article “Digital Divide” she discusses the impact of digital art and its role in society and social media. She states that most art today deploys new technology in at least one stage of production, dissemination, and consumption. This got me thinking about my own work as an artist and ow important technology is for sharing and creating my work. In high school I took a film photography class and there was very little digital technology used in the dark room and process. I enjoyed this escape from digital production and created unique and one-of-a-kind prints that only a small group of people had access to. Another aspect is the social realm of art. Gathering together around food or conversation to discuss and share art dates back centuries. Today we see an enormous forum of art on social media outlets like instagram, facebook, pinterest, tumblr, and other sites that cultivate online communities of artists. The information age also serves as an archival system where millions of pieces of information can be securely preserved. Bishop goes on to say that the uniqueness of the art object can sometimes be lost within the digital realm and this is why digital art is not as popular.
